Call of Duty Players Steal Over $3 Million In Cryptocurrency in Hacking Scheme
As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, A group of “Call of Duty” video game players — including men from Dolton and Bloomington, Illinois are suspected of stealing more than $3 million in cryptocurrency in a computer-hacking scheme, according to a court filing unsealed in Chicago, IL.
The man from Bloomington told the FBI he met members of the ring online while playing “Call of Duty,” the popular online video game in which players in different places can compete in simulated warfare. He said they forced him to participate by intimidating him into participating by “SWATting” him, an act where the hacker tricks 911 operators into deploying SWAT to an unsuspecting victim's home under false pretenses.
Members of the theft ring provided with him names, phone numbers and other information allowing him to take over cell phones of their victims. He admitted to taking over the phones of more than 100 people, according to the FBI affidavit. Once the group took control of the phone, they would hack into a victim’s cryptocurrency account allowing them to transfer the balances to themselves.
